Handwriting Jewellery: Keeping a Little Piece of Someone Close
Have you ever come across an old birthday card or handwritten letter that’s stopped you in your tracks?
Call me old-fashioned, but I love good old pen and paper. There’s something about a handwritten note or card from someone close to you that feels so much more meaningful than a text or email could ever capture.
After my dad died three years ago, I was sorting through some things when I came across an old birthday card from him. Seeing his handwriting stopped me in my tracks. Somehow, it made me feel closer to him, almost as though I could hear his voice again.
I really wanted to hold on to that feeling, and it led me to the idea of turning his handwriting into a piece of jewellery.
My dad always wore a silver chain that had belonged to my Nana. I decided to transform it into three bracelets, one for me and each of my sisters, with a little charm featuring his handwriting on each one. I also added an opal, his birthstone, which was a pretty addition to an otherwise simple chain.
For me, it was about more than creating something new. It was a way of keeping a little piece of our dad close, while giving something he’d treasured a new life of its own.
Jewellery like this can hold so much meaning and bring comfort in a way that’s difficult to put into words. It’s one of the things I love most about what I do: being able to create something personal that means something far beyond how it looks.
Since making those bracelets for myself and my sisters, I’ve had the privilege of creating handwriting jewellery for other people, each with a story of its own.
My own bracelet with my dad’s handwriting. This was made to go on his chain which I made into 3 bracelets.
The possibilities are endless
Handwriting jewellery doesn’t have to be a signature or a few words from a handwritten letter. It could be a little drawing by your child, a message from someone special, or even words taken from different cards and letters and brought together to create something entirely unique.
One bracelet I created featured words taken from birthday cards and letters written by four grandparents. Three of them had passed away, and the handwriting was brought together to form the words “with all my love”- a little message connecting them all in one very special piece.
It’s these personal details that make bespoke jewellery so meaningful. Every piece has its own story, and no two stories are quite the same.
This bracelet was made using 4 different sources of writing from different grandparents. The result is a beautiful combination and unique keepsake.
How does handwriting jewellery work?
The process is simpler than you might think. You send me a good-quality photograph or scan of the handwriting (or drawing) you’d like to use, and I turn it into a stamp. I then use this to create your bespoke silver piece using silver clay.
Whether you have a particular idea in mind or just a treasured piece of handwriting you’d love to preserve, I’d love to hear about it.
